Blocked drains and toilets are a common household nuisance that can cause frustration and inconvenience. There are several causes of blocked drains and toilets, which can range from simple issues to more serious plumbing problems.
One of the most common causes of blocked drains and toilets is the accumulation of debris such as hair, soap scum, food particles, or toilet paper. Over time, these materials can build up in the pipes and create blockages that prevent water from flowing freely. In some cases, tree roots may also invade the pipes and cause obstructions.
Another common cause of blocked drains and toilets is improper disposal of waste. Items such as grease, oil, sanitary products, diapers, and wet wipes should never be flushed down the toilet or poured down the drain as they can easily clog the pipes.
Inadequate maintenance of plumbing systems can also contribute to blocked drains and toilets. Neglecting to regularly clean and inspect your pipes can lead to a buildup of residue that eventually causes blockages.
To prevent blocked drains and toilets, it is important to practice good habits such as disposing of waste properly, avoiding pouring grease down the drain, using drain guards to catch debris, and scheduling regular maintenance checks with a plumber.
In conclusion, there are various reasons why drains and toilets get blocked. By being mindful of what goes down your pipes and taking proactive measures to maintain your plumbing system, you can minimize the risk of experiencing blockages in your home.
Blocked drains can be a major inconvenience for homes and businesses, often leading to slow drainage, foul odors, and even costly plumbing repairs if not addressed quickly. Understanding the common causes of blocked drains can help prevent these issues and keep plumbing systems functioning smoothly.
One of the primary causes of blocked drains is the buildup of grease and food particles in kitchen sinks. Over time, oils and fats solidify inside the pipes, trapping other debris and reducing water flow. To prevent this, grease should never be poured down the sink. Instead, it should be collected in a container and disposed of in the trash. Using sink strainers can also help catch food scraps before they enter the drain.
Hair accumulation in bathroom drains is another common issue. Loose hair combines with soap residue to create blockages that restrict water flow. Regularly cleaning drain covers and using a drain guard can prevent excessive hair buildup.
Flushing non-flushable items down toilets is a major cause of blockages. Wet wipes, sanitary products, cotton swabs, and even excessive toilet paper can clog pipes, leading to backups and potential damage. Toilets are designed to handle only human waste and toilet paper, and anything else should be disposed of in a waste bin.
Tree roots can invade underground drainage pipes, causing serious blockages and pipe damage. Tree roots are attracted to moisture and can grow into small cracks in pipes, eventually leading to complete blockages. Routine plumbing inspections and the use of root barriers can help prevent this problem.
Blocked drains can be avoided with proper maintenance and mindful disposal habits. Regular drain cleaning, using strainers, and being cautious about what goes down the pipes can help ensure a trouble-free plumbing system.

Howrah Plumbing were excellent to deal with. Booking a plumber was effortless and I could even nominate the day and time for the job. Bronson was a personable young man and worked efficiently. I could not recommend higher.
Was able to book online including a prefered time, which was easy to do. Turned up on time. Plumber was polite, professional and was quickly able to fix what turned out to be a small issue and also checked to make sure there was nothing bigger wrong.
Quick response to query and were able to fix my hot water system on the day. Fabulous service from everyone I interacted with and the plumber and his apprentice were highly professional and kept me in the loop. Highly recommend.
The tradesperson who came to our property was extremely polite. Although the problem was not resolved he was able to give more information via the drain cam to enable us to investigate further. Very happy with the service & we would highly recommend them & definitely use Howrah Plumbing again, special shout out to Brody.
